repercussion: 《보통 repercussions》（사건·행동의 간접적인） 영향, 반향

While some diseases can be cured, all diseases carry the possibility of causing very serious symptoms that can have life-long repercussions. 

 

lethargic: 1. 기면성(嗜眠性)의, 졸리는, 혼수상태의. 2. 무기력한, 활발하지 못한; 둔감한.

Without certain types of fat, we would become weak, lethargic, and unable to build strength or stamina in our workouts. 

 

cardiovascular: 〔의학〕 심장 혈관의

The most common non-communicable diseases in America include cardiovascular disease related to high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and stroke. 

 

dementia: 1.〔의학〕 치매: 회복 불능인 후천성의 지적 장애. cf. AMENTIA 2.광기, 정신 이상(insanity)

musculoskeletal: 근골격의

arthritis: [불]〔병리〕 （통풍·류머티즘 등에 있어서의） 관절염

Other non-communicable diseases include neurological disorders like dementia, or musculoskeletal diseases like arthritis. 

 

regimen: 1.〔의학〕 섭생, 요양법. 2. 꾸준하고 엄한 훈련; 교육 프로그램

Many studies have shown that those with a family history of diabetes, for example, have avoided developing the disease themselves by sticking to a strict exercise regimen, and eating an extremely healthy diet. 

 

repellant: 방충[구충] 제

To prevent yourself from getting the Zika virus, you should avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellant, or avoiding places where mosquitos gather, and practice safe sex. 

 

microcephaly: 1.〔의학〕 소두증(小頭症). 2.〔인류학〕 소두: 두개 내용량이 1,350cc 미만

 

diarrhea: 〔의학〕 설사

It will eventually lead to diarrhea, vomiting, and an extremely high fever that can cause organ failure. 

 

seizure: （간질 등의 돌발적인） 발작, （특히） 뇌졸중(의 발작) (apoplectic stroke)

delirious: 〔병리〕 섬망(譫妄) 상태의; 〔…으로〕 의식이 혼탁한, 헛소리하는, 광란 상태의〔with …〕

Seizures and becoming delirious are also common. 

 

primate: 〔동물〕 영장류

The virus can pass between animals and humans, so it is transferred not just by mosquitos, but also by bats, mice, and primates.

 

feces: 《복수취급》 《격식》 대소변; 찌꺼기, 침전물

Coming into contact with human or animal blood or feces is one of the most common ways that Ebola is transferred.

 

necrotizing: 괴사하는, 〈조직 등이〉 괴사 중의

fasciitis: 근막염

Flesh-eating bacteria may sound like a science fiction invention, but the disease, actually called necrotizing fasciitis, is very real.

 

nausea: 구역질, 욕지기; 뱃멀미

The symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis include having skin that is swollen, red, and hot; having a fever with chills; and having nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. 

 

marginal: （최저의） 한계에 가까운, 불충분한

The intake of proteins is also marginal, while the intake of vitamins and minerals falls far short of the desirable levels.

 

morbidity: 병적 상태[특성]; 병에 걸려 있음

Protein calorie malnutrition is largely responsible for the high rate of mortality and morbidity among poor children. 

 

gratifying: 만족을 주는, 흡족한, 유쾌한; 〔…해서〕 즐거운(pleasing), 기분 좋은〔to do〕.

One of the most gratifying features of the nutritional situation of poor communities is that, in spite of the unsatisfactory nutritional status of the mothers, the milk put forth by them is of good quality and quantity, except for the somewhat lower vitamin content. 

 

marasmus: 〔의학〕 소모증(消耗症): 유아에 많은 증세

In the other form of protein calorie malnutrition, known as marasmus, the signs and symptoms are stunting of growth and extreme wasting of muscles in the body. 

 

pruge: 〈A (장)에 하제를 써서 B (이물)를〉 제거하다

Eats little, and, if forced to eat, vomits or purges. 

 

depletion: 수분 감소 （상태） , 고갈, 소모

The absence or depletion of one or more of these constituent elements leads to poor health and retarded development. 

 

rash: 《a rash》（홍역·성홍열 등의） 발진, 홍진, 피진, 뾰루지, 두드러기

It causes rashes and sores on the skin, sore joints and muscles, loss of appetite, diarrhea and general weakness. 

 

scurvy: 괴혈병

capillary: 모세혈관

anemia: 빈혈

Scurvy - Deficiency of Vitamin C leads to scurvy, characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, weakening of the walls of the blood capillaries, anemia, and painful swellings around the joints and in the limbs.

 

mole: 1.사마귀. 2.검은 점

wart: 1.사마귀

These are not life-threatening and include moles and warts.

 

deject: 《종종 수동태》 …의 기를 꺾다, …을 풀죽게 하다, 낙심시키다

During bouts of depression, a person feels extremely dejected and has feelings of inadequacy or low self-esteem. 

 

postpartum: 출산[분만] 후의

Women in their childbearing years are more vulnerable to it, and postpartum depression is experienced by many women after childbirth. 

 

apathy: 1.무감동, 무감정. 2.〔중요한 것 또는 남이 흥미를 느끼는 것에 대한〕 냉담, 무관심 〔toward …〕

If the doctor sees the main symptoms of the condition, like sleeplessness, apathy, lack of interest and loss of appetite, and a constant feeling of fatigue, depression is short-listed as a possible cause.

 

shun: [shun＋〈목〉/shun＋doing] …을 피하다

The person is encouraged to think positively and to shun thoughts of worthlessness, guilt, and suicide. 

 

sorcery: （악령에 의한） 마법

They employed magical methods and sorcery for their treatment.

 

pancreas: 췌장

Functional disturbances in organs like the heart, kidney, liver, pancreas, etc, are also known to result in illness. 

 

pathogenic: 발병시키는; 병원(성)의

These are called pathogenic bacteria. 

 

saprophyte: 사물(死物) 기생 식물, 부생(腐生) 식물

They are small non-green plants, which live either as parasites(an organism that lives in or on another organism and thrives by deriving nutrients from the host) or as saprophytes (organisms that live on dead or decaying organic matter). 

 

misnomer: 잘못된 호칭, 오칭(誤稱); 잘못 부르기; （법률 문서의） 인명[지명] 오기(誤記)

While commonly referred to as sexually transmitted diseases, this term is actually a misnomer for diseases which can be transmitted through the direct contact of bodily fluids, including blood, sexual fluids, and in some cases, even saliva.

 

sputum: 1.〔의학〕 객담(喀痰). 2.담, 가래; 침, 타액

The cough is very painful and the sputum may be slightly colored with blood. 

 

secretion: 분비; 분비물[액]

HIV is spread by direct contact with infected blood and sexual secretions. 

 

heterosexual: 〔생물〕 이성의; 이성간의 사랑의. 이성간의 사랑을 하는 사람.
